How Buick Encore Keys Have Changed Over the Years
First Generation (Gamma II Platform)
OBD-II programming makes this one straightforward. Your Encore uses a 3-button remote head key with an ID46 transponder chip, a CR2032 battery, and a standard blade that turns in the ignition like any traditional key. The PASSKey III immobilizer talks to the chip every time you start the car, and we program it through the OBD-II port right in your driveway.
Second Generation (Gamma II Refresh)
OBD-II programming carries over here with no surprises. Buick refreshed the styling inside and out, but the key system stayed the same: 3-button remote head key, ID46 chip, CR2032 battery, standard blade. Same PASSKey immobilizer, same programming method. If you upgraded from a first gen, your key experience is identical.
Third Generation (Gamma II Late Cycle)
OBD-II programming still works on these latest models, which is good news for you. Buick kept backward compatibility with the same ID46 chip, 3-button remote head key, CR2032 battery, and standard blade. No push-button start across the lineup. The consistency across all Encore generations means we carry one key blank that covers your car whether it is a 2013 or a 2026.
Which Key Does Your Encore Use?
A plastic fob with a metal key blade built right into it. You insert the blade into the ignition to start the car, and the buttons on the fob handle lock, unlock, and trunk.
Same style as the first generation. Three buttons, standard blade, and a CR2032 battery inside. If your fob looks like a chunky key with buttons on it, this is what you have.
Buick kept the same remote head key design for the latest Encores. Three buttons, standard blade, CR2032 battery. No push-button start on any trim.

Common Buick Encore Key Problems
Remote Head Key Blade Separation
A wobbling blade gets the whole key blamed, but the real failure is the fold hinge inside the fob housing wearing out, especially in Simi Valley heat or coastal Oxnard humidity. We transfer your chip and remote board into a new shell and cut a fresh blade.
PASSKey III Immobilizer Intermittent Failures
First we verify your ID46 transponder is sending a signal. On 2013-2019 Encores, the PASSKey III receiver near the ignition can stop reading valid codes, producing an intermittent no-start. If cycling does not clear it, the receiver needs OBD-II diagnosis.
CR2032 Battery Drain in Remote Fobs
The CR2032 in your Encore fob should last two years. Dying every six months points to a stuck button contact or a short, not a bad battery. We see this on older fobs with compressed rubber pads. Chronic drain means a new shell.
OBD-II Programming Compatibility Issues
Your 2013-2015 Encore can trip up budget programming tools. Firmware variations in those years throw comm errors. We carry Autel IM608 and Xhorse VVDI with updated GM software. Told another locksmith you need the dealer? Call (805) 790-8162 first.
Can You Program a Key Yourself?
If you have at least one working key, you can add a new one yourself using GM's on-board relearn procedure. Insert your working key, turn to ON for a few seconds, turn off and remove it, then insert the new key within five seconds and turn to ON. The security light turns off when it takes. No working keys at all? That requires professional tools.
No self-programming option for these years. The system requires OBD-II programming with professional tools. We handle this on-site with our Autel IM608 or VVDI, no dealer visit needed.

Did You Know?
The Buick Encore was the first Buick model to use the Gamma II platform, which was originally developed for the Chevrolet Cruze. Buick took a compact car platform, added a luxury interior and crossover proportions, and created one of the best-selling subcompact luxury SUVs in America. Not bad for a car that shares its bones with a Chevy sedan.
