How the Encore GX Key System Evolved
1st Generation Launch
Your 2020 or 2021 Encore GX uses an ID46 transponder chip across all trims. Higher trims like the Essence get a smart proximity key with push-button start and a rechargeable battery, while the Preferred trim gets a remote head key with a CR2032 battery and a traditional ignition. Both use GM's PK3+ immobilizer, but the smart key requires server authentication for programming, which means professional tools and a live connection to GM's servers.
Mid-Cycle Refresh
Your 2022 Encore GX carries the same ID46 chip and the same key system as the 2020-2021 models. GM updated the infotainment but left the security architecture alone. Smart key trims still need server authentication through GM SPS, and the Preferred trim still programs through OBD-II. If you had a key made for a 2020, the process for a 2022 is identical.

Smart-Key Standardization
Buick dropped the Preferred remote-head trim after 2022, so every 2023 through 2026 Encore GX leaves the factory with a proximity smart key and push-button start. The fob is the HYQ4ES family with a GM EXT ID46 transponder and a laser-cut emergency blade tucked inside. Programming runs through GM SPS with server authentication, so it takes professional tools and a live connection to GM's network. There is no turn-key trim left in this range.
Which Key Does Your Encore GX Use?
This is the thick rectangular fob that stays in your pocket. You press the button on the door handle to unlock and push a button on the dash to start. There is a small emergency key hidden inside for manual door entry.
This is the key with buttons built into the head that you physically insert into the ignition to start the car. No push-button start on this trim. It uses a standard CR2032 coin battery you can swap yourself.
Starting in 2023, every Encore GX trim ships with this proximity fob, so the old remote-head Preferred option is gone. It is the HYQ4ES key with a GM EXT ID46 transponder and a hidden laser-cut emergency blade. Keep it in your pocket, press the door handle to unlock, push the dash button to start. Programming needs GM SPS server authentication, which means professional tools and a live connection.

Common Encore GX Key Problems
Key Fob Battery Drain
First we check whether the fob sits near electronics at home. Phones, tablets, and USB chargers keep the proximity sensor polling, killing the rechargeable fast. Store it five feet from electronics overnight. Still draining? Call (805) 790-8162.
Transponder Sync Failure
Owners blame the key when the car refuses recognition after a battery swap. Disconnecting the 12V knocks the ID46 transponder out of sync with PK3+. Your 2021-2022 Encore GX needs a relearn. We handle it on-site in Oxnard, Simi Valley, wherever you are.
Proximity Sensor Not Detecting Key
Walk up, grab the handle, nothing, key in your pocket. Common on 2020-2021 models in coastal Ventura and Camarillo where humidity affects the capacitive sensors. A firm press sometimes works. If it persists, the sensor needs attention.
Aftermarket Fob Programming Failures
Wrong FCC ID causes most failed programming attempts. Your Encore GX smart key must match FCC ID N5F-S0081T exactly. Look-alikes pair for remote functions then fail on the immobilizer side. We carry verified-compatible blanks on every call.
Can You Program an Encore GX Key Yourself?
If you have two working smart keys, you can add a third one yourself using the door cylinder method. Place your two existing keys in the center console cupholder, insert the new key's emergency blade into the driver door cylinder, and turn to unlock five times within 10 seconds. The display walks you through the rest. This only programs the remote and proximity functions. The transponder and immobilizer still need professional programming with GM server access.
With one working key, you can add a new remote head key using the ignition cycle method. Turn your existing key to ON, then OFF, then insert the new key and turn to ON within five seconds. The security light turns off when it takes. Again, this handles remote functions only. The ID46 transponder chip needs OBD-II programming to start the car.

Did You Know?
The Buick Encore GX shares its VSS-F platform with the Chevrolet Trailblazer. The key blades are actually cross-compatible between the two vehicles, but the transponder programming is model-specific. GM built two very different vehicles on the same bones, one aimed at budget-conscious buyers and the other at the entry-luxury crowd.
