Total job is quicker than most people expect.

What kind of key does the 2004 Corvette actually use, and why does it need programming?

Your 2004 Corvette uses a remote, which is a fob that handles both keyless entry and engine start authorization in one unit. There are four buttons for locking, unlocking, and the other functions, and inside the fob body is a transponder chip that communicates with the vehicle's theft deterrent system every time you start the car.

The cut blade alone won't start the car. The chip has to be recognized by the vehicle before fuel delivery is authorized. A key that's been cut correctly but not programmed, or programmed with the wrong chip, will crank the engine and then kill it after a couple seconds. That's the theft deterrent system doing exactly what it's supposed to do.

That message means the vehicle security system didn't get a valid signal from the transponder in your key. A few things can cause it.

First, try your spare key if you have one. If the spare starts the car cleanly, the problem is with the original fob, either a dead battery, a failing chip, or a damaged board.

If you only have one key and it just stopped working, the C5-generation Corvette does support a timed relearn sequence. Turn the key to the ON position without cranking, let the security light blink and then go steady or go out, which can take up to ten minutes, then turn the key off and try to start normally. This won't fix a programming issue, but it can recover from a temporary fault.

If the warning keeps coming back, especially after the car ran fine and then started cutting out, that pattern usually points to a key that was programmed incorrectly, a worn ignition cylinder that's not reading the chip cleanly, or a chip that's starting to fail. Those need hands-on diagnosis, not a relearn trick.

I bought a replacement fob online. Can I program it myself to my 2004 Corvette?

Not on this vehicle. The 2004 Corvette does not have an onboard self-programming sequence for adding a new remote or transponder key. Some older GM trucks and cars have an ignition-cycle trick to add a fob, but the C5 Corvette's theft deterrent setup requires a programmer that communicates through the diagnostic port to register a new key to the vehicle. If you bought a fob online and it matches the factory FCC ID for this application, it can be programmed, but you still need someone with the right equipment to do it. The fob you bought isn't wasted, it just needs to be paired properly.

My Corvette starts fine but the remote lock and unlock stopped working. Do I need a whole new key?

Not necessarily. On the 2004 Corvette, the remote entry receiver and the transponder side of the key operate through the same fob but the failure modes can be different. If the car starts fine, the transponder is still being read correctly. Dead remote functions usually point to one of three things: a weak or dead CR2032, a cracked or corroded contact inside the fob, or the fob body took a hit and the board shifted.

Pop the fob open, check that the battery is seated flat and the contacts aren't corroded, and swap in a fresh CR2032. If that doesn't bring the buttons back, bring it by. I can check the board before you spend money on a full replacement.
