A woman at the coin laundry near Lemon Grove Plaza in Oxnard had a Corvette that was gaslighting her. Her 2004 C5 would start fine in the morning, then by evening it would throw "Service Theft Deterrent System" on the DIC and cut fuel about two seconds after crank. She thought it was electrical. Took it to a shop. They found nothing.
Turned out another locksmith had made her a key about a week earlier. It worked at first. Then it didn't.
I pulled the key apart and read the chip with my VVDI2. Wrong transponder generation. Her Corvette runs GM's PK3 system, which does a rolling crypto verification through the Theft Deterrent Module on the steering column. A close-but-wrong chip can pass the initial learn procedure and start the car for a few cycles, then the deeper security check catches it and locks you out. That's the worst kind of failure because it looks intermittent.
I programmed a new key with the correct PK3 transponder matched to her VIN, ran the 10-minute security relearn three times through, and confirmed the Theft Deterrent light went solid then off. While I had the remote open I swapped the CR2032 too, since hers was reading low and the remote range had been dropping.
That key has been working for months. The difference between a key that starts and a key that keeps starting is the chip inside it.
