2016 Chevrolet Corvette
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: What exactly is a smart key and how does it work on the 2016 Corvette?

A smart key is a proximity fob. You carry it, and the car detects it automatically within a short range. No inserting, no turning. On the Corvette, that means passive door unlock as you approach and push-button start once you are inside. What makes it different from an older key is that the fob has to be electronically registered to the vehicle. A blank fob that fits physically will not start the car.

Q: How long does the dealer usually take for a Corvette key replacement, and why does it feel so slow?

Dealer timelines on this job vary, and not always in your favor. The actual programming time for a smart key replacement is a fraction of what the total visit ends up being. Owners on Corvette forums have reported being quoted multi-hour windows for what turned out to be a 30-to-45-minute job once a technician actually touched the car.

Q: I bought a replacement fob online for my 2016 Corvette. Can I just use that, or does it still need programming?

It still needs programming. A fob from an online listing, even one described as compatible or pre-owned from the same model year, will not function until it is registered to your specific vehicle through the OBD port using diagnostic equipment. The vehicle security system only recognizes fobs that have been formally enrolled. An unprogrammed fob will not unlock the doors, will not allow the car to start, and will not interact with the proximity system at all.

Q: My 2016 Corvette key fob works for starting but the doors stopped responding to it. What is going on?

This one is worth sorting carefully because the symptom splits in a couple of directions. If the start button still reads the fob fine but door unlock on approach stopped working, check the fob battery first. Passive entry functions are more sensitive to low battery voltage than the start system is. A fob that is weak enough to drop passive unlock can still have enough signal to authorize a start at close range.

2016 Chevrolet Corvette Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A guy in South Bank called me on a Tuesday afternoon. He was parked in the lot behind his apartment building, car sitting in the sun, and his fob had stopped being recognized consistently. Sometimes the door would unlock on approach, sometimes it would not. The start button would flash a key-not-detected warning and then catch on the second or third try. He figured it was something serious.

I got there and asked him the first question I always ask: when did you last change the fob battery. He looked at the car like I was speaking another language.

Popped the battery cover, pulled the old cell out, and it was reading low on my tester. Installed a fresh CR2032, reseated the cover, and walked the car. Approach unlock worked every time. Start button read the fob on the first press. No warning on the dash.

That was it. The whole thing took maybe ten minutes. He had already been mentally preparing to call the dealer and arrange a tow, because without consistent fob function he was worried about getting stranded. He was relieved it was that simple.

Not every call is a full replacement job. Some of them are just a battery and knowing where to look.

Chevrolet Corvette Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Do I have to go to the Chevrolet dealer to get a replacement smart key for my 2016 Corvette?▼

No. A mobile locksmith with the right GM-capable diagnostic equipment can cut and program a replacement smart key on site, wherever the car is parked. The 2016 Corvette does require professional tooling through the OBD port to register a new fob to the vehicle security system. There is no owner-accessible self-programming sequence for proximity smart keys on this car. But that work does not have to happen at a dealership.
