I got a call from a guy out in the Corriganville area of Simi Valley, parked at a small commercial lot near one of the production facilities out there. He'd gone to start his 2013 Spark on his lunch break and the fob was doing nothing. No lock, no unlock, not even a click. He had the key part of the remote head key working, so he could at least get in and start the car manually, but the remote functions were dead and he was convinced he needed a whole new unit.

The contact on that side was slightly corroded. I cleaned it, seated a fresh CR2032, snapped the housing back together, and handed it to him.
He pressed lock. The car beeped. He pressed it again. Beeped again. He laughed a little, like he wasn't sure whether to be relieved or embarrassed.
He didn't need a new fob. He didn't need programming. He needed a battery and about eight minutes of someone's time. The dealer would have had him schedule an appointment, bring the car in, and wait while they ran diagnostics on something a fresh CR2032 fixed.
He asked if I could make him a spare while I was there. I did. Now he's got a backup in the console and isn't one bad battery away from a problem again.
