Real pattern from owner reports: a locksmith quotes a low number to get the job, then adds a programming surcharge, a security fee, or some invented licensing charge after the work is done. By that point the key is cut, the car starts, and you feel like you have no choice.

A legitimate locksmith gives you one number before they touch the car, and that number covers the cut and the relearn together. Call and ask for a total for a 2011 Impala transponder key, cut and programmed. If they hedge, move on.

That said, a crank-no-start has other causes too. But if you recently had a key made somewhere, or the key got wet, took a hard impact, or the chip head cracked, start there. A chip that reads intermittently is worse than one that fails completely, because the car will start sometimes and strand you other times with no obvious pattern.

I bought a replacement key blank online. Can I program it myself at home?

Not on the 2011 Impala. There is no ignition-turn sequence or button trick that will program a new transponder key without external equipment. The onboard relearn on this generation requires a working already-programmed key to initiate the process, and even then it needs a tool to complete the transponder registration. If you are in an all-keys-lost situation, the tool does the heavy lifting from the OBD port.

The blank you bought online is fine to use. Bring it to me and I cut and program it on site. You do not need to buy the key from a dealer to have it work.
