Q: What exactly is a transponder key and why does my 2011 Impala need one?

The key your Impala uses has a small chip embedded in the head. When you turn the key, the vehicle's immobilizer reads that chip. If it recognizes the code, the engine starts. If it does not, the car cranks but will not fire, and the theft deterrent light on the dash stays on or flashes to tell you the key was rejected.

Q: What equipment do you use to program a key for a 2011 Chevrolet Impala?

For this generation Impala, programming runs through the OBD port using a GM-capable diagnostic tool. The immobilizer relearn on these follows GM's timed security cycle, and the tool has to speak the right protocol for that platform. Q: My 2011 Impala cranks but will not start. Could this be a key programming issue?

It could be. On this generation, if the immobilizer does not recognize the transponder chip, the engine cranks normally but fuel delivery gets cut and the car will not start. Check the theft deterrent indicator on the dash while you try. If it stays lit or flashes during and after the crank attempt, the vehicle is flagging a key recognition problem. That said, a crank-no-start has other causes too.

Q: I bought a replacement key blank online. Can I program it myself at home?

Not on the 2011 Impala. There is no ignition-turn sequence or button trick that will program a new transponder key without external equipment. The onboard relearn on this generation requires a working already-programmed key to initiate the process, and even then it needs a tool to complete the transponder registration. If you are in an all-keys-lost situation, the tool does the heavy lifting from the OBD port. The blank you bought online is fine to use.

2011 Chevrolet Impala Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from a guy parked near Alameda Park, just on the edge of the Upper East in Santa Barbara.

He had snapped his key in the ignition of his 2011 Chevrolet Impala, clean break, half the blade stuck in the cylinder and the other half in his hand. He was on his way to meet someone and was trying to stay calm about it, but I could hear the edge in his voice.

He was back on the road in well under an hour from when he called me. The whole job, extraction, cut, and relearn, done in his parking spot without a tow, without a dealer appointment, and for a fraction of what a dealer would have quoted him for the same work stretched across a day or two.

Snapped keys feel catastrophic in the moment. On a 2011 Impala, it is one of the more manageable jobs I run.
