2012 Chevrolet Impala Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A body shop in Santa Barbara called me about a 2012 Impala that had been sitting in their lot for two days. They'd already called another locksmith for a key replacement. That locksmith got a theft deterrent warning mid-sequence, couldn't clear it, and walked away. The body shop owner sounded tired when he explained it.

When I got there, the OBD port wasn't responding the way it should. The previous attempt had interrupted the security handshake partway through, which left the body control module stuck in a fault state. Some locksmiths hit that wall and call it a dealer problem. I didn't.

I pulled the BCM, read the security data directly off the chip using my bench tool, cleared the fault state, and rebuilt the handshake from scratch. Once the module was back in a clean state, the new transponder key learned on the first attempt. The theft deterrent warning cleared. I tested the key, tested the start cycle, and walked the body shop through what the first locksmith had done wrong so they'd know what to watch for.

The whole job ran about an hour and a half, longer than a normal key replacement. The owner picked up his car the same afternoon. The alternative was a flatbed ride across town, a multi-day dealer queue, and a bill that would have been a lot more than what he paid me. I carry the bench tools because some jobs need them, and I'd rather have them and not need them than the other way around.
