2012 Chevrolet Impala Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A body shop near the Karpeles Manuscript Library in Santa Barbara called me about a 2012 Impala that was dead in their lot. Another locksmith had already tried a key replacement, lost communication mid-program, and left the body control module stuck in a fault state. The dash was throwing "Service Theft Deterrent System" and the car would crank but cut fuel after two seconds. Classic BCM lockout. The other guy told them to tow it to the dealer.

I checked the OBD-II port first. The BCM, a 20939745 unit on these 9th-gen Impalas, was rejecting new key data because the interrupted attempt had corrupted the learned key table. The port was responding but the security access handshake kept timing out.

So I pulled the BCM and went to bench. Read the security data directly off the EEPROM, cleared the corrupted key slots, and rebuilt the PK3 seed values. Put the module back in, ran the 30-minute theft deterrent relearn with the new key, and the engine caught on the first full crank.

I walked the body shop guys through what happened so they'd know the signs if a locksmith ever left them hanging like that again. The whole job ran about an hour and a half, which is longer than a normal key replacement. But it got done same-day, on-site, for a fraction of what the dealer route would have cost after the tow and the multi-day wait.
