2013 Chevrolet Impala
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: How long will a replacement key last?

Years, realistically, if you treat it like a key and not a bottle opener. The transponder inside is passive, no battery, no moving parts. It just sits there and does its job. The blade and the plastic head are what wear out first. The head can crack around the key ring loop if it takes enough abuse.

Q: What if the new key stops working after a few weeks?

Call us. We come back. Every key we make is covered. If it stops starting the car or develops any issue under normal use, we fix or replace it. We test the key before we leave the site, which means we already confirmed it works once. If something changes after, that's on us to sort out. We've heard enough stories about locksmiths who won't return calls after the job is done. That's not how we operate.

Q: I have one working key. Can I program a second key myself without a tech?

On the 2013 Impala, there is an onboard procedure that can add a second transponder key if you already have two working programmed keys in hand. The catch is most people only have one spare, which means they don't meet that two-key requirement. And the procedure is specific: it involves turning the ignition through a timed sequence with the existing keys, and the window to do it right is short.

Q: My 2013 Impala starts fine sometimes and other times it just cranks with no start. Could it be the key?

Yes, and it's a common complaint on these. An intermittent no-start where the engine cranks but doesn't fire is one of the classic signs that the immobilizer isn't reading the chip in the key.

2013 Chevrolet Impala Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

It was just before 6 in the morning when the call came in. A guy over in the Samarkand neighborhood of Santa Barbara, warehouse job, shift starting in minutes. His 2013 Impala key had snapped, blade stuck in the ignition cylinder. Not bent, not worn. Snapped clean. He was standing outside his car in the dark and his foreman was already clocking people in.

I keep the van loaded for exactly this. Twenty minutes and I was on site.

The broken section came out of the cylinder without drama. I decoded the lock and cut a new key to match. Then came the part a hardware store can't do: getting the chip in that new key recognized by the car. The Impala sat there for a moment after I turned it, which is normal while the system processes, and then it started right up. I cut him a second key on the spot and showed him where to stash it so this doesn't become a repeat call.

He made it in. Clocked in late, but not embarrassingly late. He texted me that afternoon.

The dealer option would have meant a tow, a wait for the service department to open, and losing most of a workday. That wasn't a realistic choice at 6am on a Tuesday in Santa Barbara.

Chevrolet Impala Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Do you use OEM or aftermarket keys on Chevrolet vehicles?▼

We use professional-grade keys from tested suppliers, not the five-dollar blanks floating around on Amazon. The difference matters most on the chip side. A key blank that looks identical can carry a transponder that doesn't program cleanly to the Impala's immobilizer, and then you're chasing an intermittent no-start that's hard to diagnose. The blade cut also has to be precise or you're adding wear to the ignition cylinder every time you turn the key.
