Got a call from a woman parked near the Santa Barbara Maritime Museum. She had just left an urgent care visit with her kid and a bag of prescriptions in the back seat. Her 2010 Chevrolet Impala would crank but not start. The security light on the dash was solid, which on these ninth-gen Impalas means the PK3+ immobilizer lost communication with the transponder chip in the key.
She had already called the dealer. Closed for the day. Pharmacy closed at nine. It was just after seven.
I was about twenty minutes out.
When I got there, I plugged my Autel IM608 into the OBD-II port under the dash and pulled the PK3+ system status. The Body Control Module, part number 20835166 on most of these W-body Impalas, was not seeing a valid transponder response. Her original key's ID 48 chip had gone intermittent. Likely from being dropped or flexed in a purse over the years. The chip looked fine physically, but the read was inconsistent.
Cut a new B111 blade, paired a fresh Megamos 48 transponder to the BCM through the diagnostic port, and tested the full start cycle three times. Then I walked her through the PK3+ relearn trick where you leave the key on for ten minutes if the security light ever acts up again.
From her phone call to engine running was under fifty minutes. She made the pharmacy with time to spare. The dealer would have been the next day at the earliest, and for a good chunk more than what I charged.
