2009 Chevrolet Cobalt Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A body shop in Oak View called me about a Cobalt that had been sitting in their lot for three days.

A customer had brought the car in for unrelated work, lost his only key during the process, and the shop had already tried to help by calling another locksmith. That locksmith cut a key, attempted programming, got a theft deterrent warning on the dash, and left without finishing the job.

By the time I got there, the car wouldn't respond to anything. The previous attempt had interrupted mid-sequence, and the immobilizer was stuck in a fault state. The OBD port wasn't fully locked out, but the security system wasn't cooperating through normal channels either.

I pulled the body control module data directly, cleared the fault condition, and rebuilt the security authorization from scratch before attempting the new key. Once the module was back in a clean state, the key programmed on the first try. No drama after that -- the car started, idled normally, and the warning cleared.

The whole job ran about ninety minutes. Longer than a standard Cobalt key, but the extra time was because of the recovery work, not the programming itself. The shop owner said the dealer had quoted a multi-day turnaround and a tow. His customer drove out the same afternoon.

I explained to the shop what had gone wrong with the first attempt so they'd have context if it ever came up again. A mid-sequence power drop or a tool that doesn't fully support this generation will leave the module in exactly that condition. The fix exists, but you need the right equipment to get there.
