Got a call from someone over in the Oxnard Auto Center area. She was sitting in her 2007 G5 in a dealership service lot, funny enough, but she was there for tires, not keys. Went to leave and the security light came on solid. Engine cranked, no start. The tire shop told her it was an immobilizer problem and they couldn't touch it.
She tried the old 10-minute relearn everyone finds on the G5 forums. Crank, wait for the light to go off, turn off, repeat three times. Nothing. The light just stayed on like it had made up its mind.
I pulled up and plugged into the OBD-II port. The BCM had stored a B2960, which is the security password mismatch code. Her original key had a worn-down resistor, probably from years of the lock cylinder grinding against it. The resistance was drifting out of the Passlock II tolerance window.
Cut a fresh GM10 blank to factory spec right there in the van, ran the Passlock relearn through the Tech2 scan tool to register the new key's resistance value to the BCM. The whole process took about 25 minutes including the timed relearn cycle that GM builds into the procedure.
When it started, she just sat there for a second with her hands on the wheel, like she didn't want to jinx it. Then she drove off to finish her afternoon. No tow, no coming back tomorrow, no dealer labor rate.
