How Subaru WRX Keys Evolved
GD Sedan: Bug-eye, Blob-eye, Hawk-eye
Subaru introduced the Subaru Immobilizer system here, pairing a Texas 4D-62 transponder chip with a standard cut key blade. That means your key has to be both cut correctly and electronically matched to your car's security module. On-board programming keeps things straightforward, and we handle these in about 15 to 25 minutes in your driveway.
GE/GH Sedan and Hatchback
Subaru carried the Subaru immobilizer system forward but tightened the programming tolerances. Your key still uses the Subaru G chip (Texas 4D-60 80-bit) and a standard blade, but the on-board programming procedure is pickier than the GD generation. One wrong attempt can lock you out of programming mode entirely, which is why this one really needs professional equipment.
Push-Button Start Era
This is where security got serious. Subaru moved to Subaru's advanced transponder inside a proximity smart key with a laser-cut emergency blade. You carry the fob in your pocket, walk up, and the car unlocks. Programming requires OBD-II access with professional tools, but we handle it on-site without any dealer involvement.
VA Platform, Latest Generation
Subaru kept Subaru's smart key system but added server authentication requirements for certain programming scenarios. If you have a working key and need a spare, we can program it on-site. All-keys-lost situations on these newer models may require dealer server access, and we will tell you that upfront before we roll out.
Which Key Does Your WRX Use?
A traditional metal key with a teardrop-shaped fob. You turn it in the ignition to start the car, but the Subaru G chip inside has to match your WRX's immobilizer or the engine won't fire.
Similar to the previous generation with the Subaru G chip (Texas 4D-60) and standard blade. The fob shape changed slightly, but the key still goes in the ignition. Programming is more sensitive on these models.
A slim proximity fob that stays in your pocket. Your WRX detects it automatically and lets you push a button to start. The emergency blade inside is laser-cut for the door cylinder.
The latest smart key with Subaru's advanced transponder and push-button start. Looks similar to the 2015-2021 fob but uses updated encryption. The hidden emergency blade gets you in the door if the battery dies.
What Your WRX Key Costs
All prices include the key blank, cutting, programming, and testing; lockouts run $95 to $125.
Us vs. the Dealer
We diagnose before we quote. The dealer charges you before they diagnose.
Common WRX Key Problems
Immobilizer Antenna Failures
The receiver antenna around your ignition cylinder corrodes over time, on 2002-2010 models. Corrosion breaks the signal between your Subaru G chip and the immobilizer module, so the car cranks but won't start. We test antenna and transponder separately.
Smart Key Battery Drain
Your 2015+ WRX fob keeps polling for the car's proximity sensor, even on the counter. That drains the CR2032 in three to six months. Pop a fresh battery first. Drain continues? The proximity receiver needs diagnostics in Oxnard or Simi Valley.
Transponder Chip Delamination
People assume a key that works sometimes has a dying battery. On WRX 2002-2021, the culprit is often the transponder chip delaminating from heat cycling and moisture. Internal layers separate, signal goes garbled. We check this first on intermittent no-starts.
On-Board Programming Lockouts
We verify your key count and battery voltage before touching programming on a 2008-2014 WRX. The GE/GH on-board system locks out after three or four failed attempts. Happens often with DIY or rushed programming. Locked out? Call (805) 790-8162.
Can You Program a WRX Key Yourself?
You can program the keyless entry remote buttons yourself using a 10-cycle ignition procedure. But this only programs the lock and unlock buttons. The transponder chip still needs professional programming to start the car.
No DIY option here. The immobilizer requires professional OBD-II tools or dealer equipment. Attempting it yourself risks triggering a programming lockout that makes the job harder and more expensive.
The proximity smart key system requires professional OBD-II programming equipment. There is no on-board self-programming procedure for these models.
Modern rolling-code encryption means no DIY programming. If you have a working key and need a spare, we can handle it on-site. All-keys-lost may require dealer server authentication, and we will be straight with you about that before scheduling.

Did You Know?
The 2002 to 2003 Subaru WRX carried the official "Version 7" designation, making it the last time Subaru ever assigned version numbers to WRX models. After that, the numbered generation system that had tracked the WRX's evolution since the early 1990s was quietly retired. End of an era for the Subaru nerds who tracked every version like baseball cards.
