2003 Subaru WRX
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: How fast can you get to my location?

I cover all of Thousand Oaks, and Dos Vientos is well within my regular service area. Typical arrival is within 30 minutes of your call, depending on where I am and traffic on the 101 corridor. When you call, just confirm it's the 2003 WRX and I load the right blanks and head straight to you. No appointment scheduling, no part ordering, no waiting for a VIN-specific item to arrive at a dealer counter.

Q: Can I get a key made today?

Yes. The 2003 WRX takes a standard key blank that I carry on the van. There's nothing to order, nothing to wait on. I cut on-site using a decode of your lock, so you get a key made to the actual cylinder -- not a copy of a worn key. Same-day, same visit, done at your location in Thousand Oaks.

Q: My 2003 WRX key turns hard and sometimes doesn't come out cleanly. Do I need a new ignition cylinder?

Not necessarily. On a vehicle this age, the first thing to check is whether the key itself is worn down. A key that's been used daily for years loses definition in the cuts, and the tumblers in the cylinder have to work harder to follow a rounded profile. That friction adds up. Before assuming the cylinder is done, get a fresh key cut directly from the lock decode -- not copied from the worn key.

Q: I bought a key blank online for my 2003 WRX. Can you just cut it to my car?

Depends on whether the blank you bought is actually the right profile for that year. There are a few blanks that look close but don't seat correctly in the WRX cylinder from this generation. If you bring me the blank, I can check it against the lock before cutting. If it's wrong, I have the correct one on the van. Either way, I decode the lock and cut to that -- not to another key.

2003 Subaru WRX Metal Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A guy in Dos Vientos called me on a Tuesday morning. He'd been using a hardware store copy of his 2003 WRX key for about six months because he'd lost the original.

The copy worked, sort of, until it didn't. Stuck in the ignition one morning, had to wiggle and coax it free, and after that he didn't trust it enough to drive. His wife had taken their other car to work.

I pulled up to his place off Weathersfield, tools already loaded. The copy was visibly off when I held it up -- shallow cuts in two positions, one peak that was a little too high. Hardware store machines read the key you hand them, not the lock. If the key you hand them is already worn, the copy is worse than the original.

I decoded the driver's door cylinder directly with my tools, confirmed the cuts, and cut him a new key from a fresh blank. Tested it in the door, tested it in the ignition, full rotation both directions, smooth. Then I cut him a second one while I was there so he'd have a real spare this time.

He mentioned the dealer was across town and had told him they'd need to look at it first before quoting anything. He'd already decided that wasn't happening on a Tuesday morning when he had somewhere to be.

He was back inside before his coffee got cold.

How long does a 2003 Subaru WRX key replacement take?▼

Faster than most people expect, because this is a mechanical key job. There's no programming, no OBD connection, no timed wait for an immobilizer reset. I decode the lock, cut the key, test it. From the time I arrive to handing you a working key, you're usually looking at 15 to 20 minutes. If you want two keys cut while I'm there, add maybe five minutes.
