Got a call from the Leisure Village community area in Camarillo. A nanny doing preschool pickup had a 2010 Subaru WRX that would crank but not fire. Two kids buckled in the back, maybe an hour before the parents expected everyone home. She tried the key a dozen times. Dashboard just blinked the immobilizer security light and the engine would spin without catching.
She had already called the dealer. They said bring it in Friday. It was Wednesday.
I loaded up the SUB80 blank and my Smart Pro and headed over. When I got there, I checked her existing key first. The transponder inside had cracked, probably from being on a heavy keyring and taking hits against the steering column housing for years. The 4D-62 chip was physically damaged enough that the antenna coil around the ignition wasn't getting a clean read.
Cut a new SUB80 on my Condor, cloned the working chip data onto a fresh TK5561A, and seated it in the new key head. Turned the ignition, security light went solid for a second, then off. Fired right up.
She pulled out of that parking lot at 1:03 with both kids and made it home before the parents walked in. The whole thing took less than 40 minutes from my arrival. The dealer would have meant a tow, a two-day wait, and a chunk of change that would have hurt.
