2005 Subaru WRX Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
Casa Conejo, a Wednesday afternoon. A chiropractor had patients stacked back to back until 5pm and his 2005 WRX wouldn't start in the parking lot between appointments.
He'd owned the car since it was new, put a lot of miles on it, and had exactly one key. That key had been on the same ring for years, getting hot in a pocket, getting wet, getting tossed in a gym bag. At some point the transponder in the head just gave up. The car would crank and crank and immediately cut out, which is exactly what the immobilizer does when it doesn't see a valid signal from the key.
He called me while standing between his noon and 12:30 patients. Couldn't tow it, couldn't leave, couldn't come back later. I was already working in Thousand Oaks that morning so I swung into his lot.
I cut a new key blade to match the lock and then enrolled the transponder through the OBD port. The mandatory security wait on an all-keys-lost job on this generation is real, so I sat in the lot while the system timed out. He came back out between patients, the car started clean, and he had a working key in his hand before his 2pm slot.
He mentioned the dealer had quoted him a wait of several days minimum, plus a tow since the car wouldn't drive. He paid a fraction of that, the car never left the lot, and his schedule didn't get wrecked.
