Out in the Somis area of Camarillo, a mountain biker dropped a pin on a fire road pullout where his 2014 WRX was sitting in the dirt. He had lost his only key somewhere on the trail. No spare at home. No dealer anywhere close that could help, and even if there was, no flatbed was getting back to that pullout easily.
He hiked until he got cell signal and texted me.
I loaded up everything for his car and drove out. Found the WRX right where the pin said it would be, dusty and locked. I decoded the DAT17 lock on the driver door, cut a fresh SUB80 blank on my mobile machine right on the tailgate of my van, then connected my ACDP to the OBD port to read the immobilizer module and clone the 4D60 80-bit transponder data onto a new chip.
The part that took the longest was the drive out there, not the job.
He turned the key and the boxer engine fired up in that dirt lot. He just stood there for a second looking at the trail like he was thinking about going back to search for the old key. Then he got in and left.
A dealer would have needed a tow, an appointment, and days. He was driving home inside of an hour.
