2009 Subaru WRX
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: What exactly is a transponder key, and why does my 2009 WRX need one?

The transponder key has a small chip embedded in the plastic head. When you turn the key in the ignition, the car's immobilizer reads that chip. If the chip is recognized, the engine starts. If it isn't, the car cranks but won't fire, or won't crank at all depending on how the system responds. On the 2009 WRX there is no remote, no fob, no battery. The key is purely mechanical plus that chip.

Q: Why does the dealer take so long on Subaru key jobs?

Three real bottlenecks. First, blanks often have to be ordered by VIN. If your exact blank isn't sitting in their parts bin, you're waiting for a shipment. Second, the programming side requires dealer-level software and a documented security verification process before a new key gets added. That adds administrative time even when the physical parts are in hand. Third, scheduling.

Q: I bought a cut key online for my 2009 WRX and it turns the ignition but the car won't start. What's going on?

Classic symptom of an unenrolled transponder. The blade is cut to fit the cylinder, so it turns, but the chip inside that key head hasn't been registered to your car's immobilizer. The car sees an unknown chip and kills the start sequence. This comes up constantly on WRX forums. People find a cheap key online, get the blade cut at a hardware store, and then wonder why the car cranks but won't run.

Q: Can I program a spare transponder key for my 2009 WRX myself at home?

The 2009 WRX doesn't have a published owner-accessible self-programming sequence the way some older economy cars do. Adding a key requires diagnostic equipment that communicates with the immobilizer. There's no ignition-turn sequence or button combo that handles it on this car. If you have a working key and want a spare cut and programmed, that's a quick job. I come to you, handle the whole thing on site. No need to involve the dealer.

2009 Subaru WRX Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

He landed after a backpacking trip overseas, walked up to level four of the airport garage, and the WRX just sat there. No response, no lights, nothing. He was already tired and running on airport coffee.

After a minute he figured out the problem: his key blade had snapped partway through the trip, probably from being jammed in a bag with too much other stuff. He had the bow of the key, but the working blade was gone. No spare. His backup key was at home in Waverly Heights.

Tow would have been a day's wait minimum. Dealer in Thousand Oaks said they needed to verify ownership, order the blank by VIN, and schedule programming. That was going to be Thursday at the earliest, and it was Tuesday morning.

He found me online and I was at the garage inside of forty-five minutes.

I decoded the lock cylinder right there in the parking structure, cut a new blade to spec, and handled the transponder enrollment on site. The whole job was done before he would have even finished the paperwork at the dealer. He drove himself home, stopped for food on the way, and texted me that the car started clean three more times before he got there.

He mentioned the dealer quote when we were wrapping up. I told him what I charged. He was quiet for a second, then said something like "that's it?" Yeah, that's it.

Subaru WRX Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

How long does the Subaru dealer take for a key replacement on a 2009 WRX?▼

It depends on whether they have the blank in stock. If they do, and it's a straightforward add-a-key with a working key already present, some dealers can turn it around in under an hour. But the 2009 WRX blank isn't something most dealers keep a shelf full of, so ordering by VIN is common, and that adds days. Then programming needs to be scheduled separately in some shops. All-keys-lost is a different story.
