2008 Subaru WRX
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: How long does programming take once you are at my car?

If you already have one working key and just want a spare, the on-car programming time for a 2008 WRX typically runs somewhere between 15 and 30 minutes once I am connected. If all keys are lost, there is usually a mandatory wait period built into the immobilizer reset sequence before new keys can be enrolled. Either way, the full job is well under two hours from the time I pull up, usually much less.

Q: Can you make a key faster than the dealer?

Yes, and not by a small margin. Dealers often need to order blanks, schedule appointments days out, and some will tell all-keys-lost customers the module needs to leave the car entirely, adding weeks to the job. I carry blanks for the 2008 WRX on the truck and handle cutting and programming in a single visit. No appointment, no waiting, no leaving your car behind.

Q: My 2008 WRX starts fine with one key but won't start with the other. Is the second key dead?

Not necessarily dead, but the transponder in that key may have lost its registration with the immobilizer, or the chip itself could be failing. The ignition coil reads the chip every single time you turn the key. If the read fails, the car won't start regardless of whether the cut blade fits the lock perfectly. First thing I check is whether the non-starting key physically turns the ignition.

Q: Can I copy a 2008 WRX key at a hardware store or a kiosk?

They can cut the blade, but that's all you'd get. A key cut at a hardware store kiosk will open the door and turn the ignition cylinder, and then the car won't start because the transponder chip won't be there or won't be programmed to your vehicle's immobilizer. You need both things: a blade cut to your car and a chip that the immobilizer recognizes. The kiosk handles one. I handle both.

2008 Subaru WRX Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A woman who runs an organic produce stand at the farmers market lot in Thousand Oaks called me on a weeknight. Her 2008 WRX had one working key left, and she wanted a spare before the inevitable happened. Three people had told her she had to go to the dealer. A friend, the dealer's own website, and an old forum post. None of them were current.

I met her at the market while she was still breaking down her booth.

The 2008 WRX takes a transponder key, full stop. No fob, no remote, no buttons. Just a metal key with a chip in the head that the ignition coil reads when you turn it. I cut a replacement blade to match her existing key and programmed the new transponder to the car's immobilizer right there on the asphalt, connected through the OBD port with my laptop.

The key turned, the car started, no warning lights, no hesitation. Done before she finished loading her truck.

She asked what the dealer would have done differently. Honestly, not much except charge more and make her wait a week for an appointment. The immobilizer doesn't know or care where the key was programmed.

Subaru WRX Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

What if I need a Subaru key after hours or on the weekend?▼

Call us. Subaru dealer service departments run Monday through Friday, with limited Saturday hours at most locations and nothing on Sunday. If you lose your only key on a Friday evening near Westlake Village, the dealer cannot help you until Monday at the earliest, and that assumes they have the correct blank in stock and an open appointment slot. We work nights and weekends.
