2023 Subaru WRX Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
She was standing outside a Costco in Simi Valley, July, with a cart full of frozen food and a fob that had decided to stop talking to her car.
The WRX was locked. The groceries were already starting their slow defeat against the heat. She pressed the fob button a few more times, the way everyone does when they already know it isn't working. Then she called me.
I was coming from the Simi Hills side, maybe twenty minutes out. By the time I pulled up she had moved the cart into the shade and was staring at the fob like it owed her an explanation.
First thing I did was pull the backup blade from inside the fob housing and get the door open. She didn't know that was in there. Most people don't. Once we were in and the groceries were sitting under the AC vent, I checked the fob battery. Dead, and not recently dead either. The kind of dead where it's been limping along on just enough voltage to sometimes work, which is its own kind of problem because intermittent fob behavior makes owners think the system is failing when the battery has just been slowly giving up for months.
Swapped the CR2032, confirmed the fob was pairing correctly with the vehicle, walked every button, tested the handle touch unlock on both front doors, and made sure push-button start was responding the way it should.
She asked if I needed to plug into anything. I told her for a battery swap and verification, no. She seemed surprised the fix was that contained. The dealer had told her next-day, no guarantees on timeline.
Groceries made it home fine. The fob has been working since.
