A graphic novelist up in the Hillcrest Center for the Arts neighborhood in Thousand Oaks called me because he was stuck on a steep one-lane hillside street with no turnout. Tow truck said no way. Dealer said bring the car in. He couldn't, because he had no working key and the car was pinned on that hill.
I parked at the bottom and walked up with my bag.
The 2006 WRX runs the Subaru immobilizer with a 4D-62 transponder chip, no push-button start, no proximity system. Just a physical key with a chip embedded in the head. His original key blade was worn down so badly I could barely read the cuts by eye. The transponder still had life in it, though, so I used my VVDI2 to read the chip data and clone it onto a fresh 4D-62 in a new SUB key shell.
For the blade, I decoded the lock on the driver door, then cut a DAT17 side-milled blank on my machine in the van. That part is always satisfying on these older Subarus because the lock code translates clean when the wafers are not trashed.
Walked back up the hill, slid the key in, one turn, fired right up. He just stood there holding his coffee, watching his own car start like he had not heard it in a while.
His car never left that spot. The whole thing took about 35 minutes and cost a fraction of what the dealer quoted him, and he did not have to figure out how to get a dead WRX off a hill first.
