All-keys-lost is a different situation. On older models like this one, the process is more involved because there's no working key to reference, and some dealers are less comfortable with the procedure than others. Owners have reported being told to come back on a different day, or being quoted labor times that assume the worst-case scenario.

A transponder key looks like a regular metal key but has a small chip embedded in the plastic head. When you turn it in the ignition, the car's immobilizer system sends a signal to that chip. The chip responds with a code, and if the code matches what the immobilizer expects, the car allows the engine to start. No match, no start -- even if the blade is cut perfectly and the engine cranks normally.

On the 2006 WRX, there is no remote, no fob, no buttons, and no battery in the key. It is purely a transponder turn-key. The chip is passive, meaning it draws its power from the signal the car sends rather than from any battery in the key itself.

This also means a key that looks identical to yours won't start your car if the chip isn't programmed to match your vehicle. Getting a copy made at a hardware store will get you a key that turns in the lock but won't fire the engine.

Before assuming the key itself is dead, check whether the security light on the dash is behaving abnormally. On most Subarus of this era, the light flashes during the crank and then should go out when the immobilizer clears the key. If it stays lit or keeps flashing after cranking, that's a signal the immobilizer isn't seeing a valid key code.

The antenna ring is an inexpensive part and a common wear item on cars this age. Worth ruling out before spending money on a new key.
