2011 Subaru WRX Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
I got a call from a disabled veteran in the VA clinic parking lot off Las Posas Road, not far from Old Town Camarillo. He uses a wheelchair, his wife was out of town, and he had one key to his 2011 WRX.
That key had stopped turning the car over. He wasn't sure if it was the key or something else. Getting to a dealership wasn't a minor inconvenience for him. It was a half-day production that wasn't going to happen that morning.
I drove out to the lot and found him parked near the accessible entrance. The WRX is a no-fob setup on this year, just a transponder key in an ignition cylinder, which keeps the job clean. I decoded the lock, cut a fresh key to the vehicle, and programmed the transponder through the OBD port. Tested it, started clean on the first try.
He had a spare in his hand before noon. Didn't have to call his wife back early. Didn't have to arrange a tow or a ride. The dealer had quoted him a number that made his eyes go wide, plus the small problem of actually getting there. He paid a fraction of that and didn't move his chair once.
I don't think much about the discount angle when I'm on a job like that. I just think about the fact that he could leave when he was ready.
