In Old Town Camarillo, middle of July, a WRX owner was standing in a parking lot watching her Costco haul slowly warm up in the cargo area. She pressed her fob. Nothing. Doors locked, windows up, sun doing what sun does to frozen food.
The dealer quoted next-day, earliest. She called me. I was about 20 minutes out.
First thing was getting the door open. Then I plugged my IM608 into the OBD port under the dash. Her 2016 WRX runs the HYQ14AHC smart key, 4-button layout, with Subaru's G-chip transponder talking to the Body Integrated Unit. The CR2032 was flat dead, which explained why the fob went silent. But the real issue was that a recent jump start had knocked the transponder out of sync with the BIU. The dash was throwing "KEY Warning" every time she hit the push-button start.
I swapped the battery, pulled the pin code through diagnostics, and re-registered the fob to the immobilizer. Then the part that actually matters: testing lock, unlock, trunk, panic, proximity detection on both front doors, and push-button start with the fob in three different spots in the cabin. Everything came back clean.
From her phone call to engine running was about 42 minutes. The groceries made it. That was the part she cared about.
