It was mid-July, a Tuesday, and she was in the Vons parking lot off Daily Drive in Camarillo. Costco run, back seat and cargo area loaded, and the fob stopped responding completely. Car locked. Sun doing what the sun does in July. She said the groceries were already starting to sweat through the bags.
She called the dealer. Next available appointment was the following morning.
Then she called me. I was in Spanish Hills at the time, maybe 20 minutes out.
By the time I got there, she'd already tried the fob a dozen more times, which I get. You keep pressing hoping it changes its mind. I got the door open with the emergency blade, then took a look at the fob. The CR2032 was nearly flat. Not dead zero, just low enough to kill range and prevent the module from seeing it reliably.
I replaced the battery, but on these WRX fobs, if the system has already lost the registration sync, a fresh battery alone doesn't finish the job. I connected to the OBD port, went into the security module, and re-registered the fob. Tested lock, unlock, and the other buttons. Walked both door handles for touch unlock. Started the car. Everything came back clean.
She was back on the road with cold groceries in about 40 minutes. The dealer would have been the next morning and would have cost her a good chunk more. She didn't need all of that. She needed someone to show up.
