Then you're looking at scheduling, waiting room time, and shop rate on top of the part. A job that takes me under an hour in your parking lot can easily stretch into a multi-day process at the dealer, with a tow bill attached if the car won't start.

The key blade has a small chip embedded in the head. When you insert and turn the key, the ignition reads that chip and checks it against what the immobilizer has on file. The remote buttons on the key head handle lock and unlock separately. That part runs on a battery. The transponder chip doesn't need any battery at all. So if the car won't start but the remotes still work fine, or vice versa, those are two different problems coming from two different systems on the same key.

A replacement key needs both sides addressed: the blade cut to match your locks, and the chip programmed to match your vehicle. One without the other gives you a key that either opens the doors but won't start the car, or turns the ignition but gets rejected by the immobilizer.

Three things slow it down. First, the blank is usually a VIN-specific order, not something sitting on a shelf. Second, programming requires proprietary dealer software and a credentialed workflow, so it can't be squeezed into any open bay slot. Third, if it's an all-keys-lost situation, the process is longer because the immobilizer needs to be cleared before any new key can be enrolled, and not every service advisor knows that upfront, so the labor estimate sometimes changes after the car is already in the shop.

None of that applies to a mobile job. I come to you, cut the key, program the transponder on site, and you're done. No appointment, no tow, no waiting room.

Possibly, but cranks-no-start with a key-related warning on the dash is the classic sign that the transponder isn't being read correctly. On the 2012 WRX, if the immobilizer doesn't recognize the key, the engine will crank and not fire. The vehicle security indicator, usually a small light near the speedometer, will either flash or stay solid depending on what it's seeing.

Before assuming the key is the problem, though, rule out a few other things. A worn key blade that's slipping in the ignition cylinder can cause intermittent chip read failures, even if the key is properly programmed. An aftermarket alarm spliced into the ignition circuit is another common cause that mimics an immobilizer fault perfectly. If the alarm was added after the car left the factory, trace those wires first.
