A bartender called me at 3:30 in the afternoon from the Crossroads Shopping Center in Camarillo. His shift started at 4:00 at a brewery taproom across the lot. But the car still wasn't seeing the new battery right away, so I connected through OBD to the BIU and cleared the stored fault. On these VA-chassis WRXs, sometimes a long-dead battery leaves a communication error between the fob and the Body Integrated Unit that just sitting there with a fresh cell won't fix on its own.
New CR2032 seated, fault cleared, tested all four buttons, tested both front door proximity sensors, tested push-to-start in brake and no-brake conditions. Engine fired clean.
He grabbed his apron off the passenger seat and walked into work. I think he clocked in around 4:05. The dealer on the phone had quoted him a tow plus a wait measured in days, not minutes. He would have missed a lot more than one shift.
