I was already running a job in Simi Valley on a Saturday night when the call came in. A couple near Strathearn had walked out to their 2022 WRX after dinner and the car wouldn't respond to anything. Doors stayed locked, start button did nothing. Neither of them knew about the passive backup start method, so they figured it was an overnight problem and started looking at rideshares.

When I got there I popped the fob open first. The CR2032 still had some voltage but it was low enough to cause intermittent recognition rather than a clean failure, which is actually the harder kind to diagnose because it looks like a programming issue. Swapped the cell, cleaned the contacts, reseated everything, and ran a full function test. Lock, unlock, the remaining buttons, and most importantly the start. Car fired on the first try.
No re-pairing needed. No dealer visit Monday morning. They drove home that night.
That's the part of this job I like. Fifteen minutes on site, right tools already in the van, and the fix turns out to be the simple thing done correctly. The dealer visit would have cost them significantly more and they wouldn't have seen anyone until the week started.
