2006 Subaru Impreza
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: Do I have to tow my 2006 Impreza to the dealer if I have no working key?

No. That is one option, not the only one. The dealer will ask you to tow it in, write it up, and schedule it. We come to wherever the car is sitting - a parking lot, a driveway, the side of a road in East Simi Valley - and do the full job there. Same result, no tow bill, and you're not leaving your car at a shop overnight.

Q: How long does an all-keys-lost job take on a 2006 Impreza?

Plan for roughly 30 to 45 minutes on site. The immobilizer on this generation has a mandatory timed reset that you have to wait through before the new key can be registered - there is no workaround for that window. After the countdown clears, key registration goes quickly. Cutting the blade adds a few minutes if it's being done by decode rather than from a code on file. One visit, same day.

Q: Can I buy a key blank online and have it cut and programmed, or does it have to come from you?

You can buy a blank online, but be careful. The 2006 Impreza takes a specific blade profile and the transponder inside the blank has to be the correct type for this generation's immobilizer to accept it. A lot of the cheap blanks floating around online either have the wrong blade cut or a chip that won't pair. If you show up with a blank you already bought, I'll tell you upfront whether it's usable before I touch it.

Q: My 2006 Impreza starts fine but sometimes takes two or three tries. Could the transponder be failing?

Possibly. On these, an intermittent read failure between the key and the immobilizer antenna ring can show up exactly like that - most starts are fine, then once in a while it hesitates or requires a retry. It can also be a worn key where the blade is fine but the transponder inside has taken physical damage from a heavy keychain or a drop. Before assuming the worst, try starting with just the key and nothing else on the ring.

2006 Subaru Impreza Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from a guy at the brake shop off Alamo Street in East Simi Valley. He was an Uber driver, already running behind, and already burned.

He'd called one of those $49 Google ads earlier that week. A locksmith showed up, charged him way more than quoted, and the key sort of worked - the car would start, but he wasn't confident the programming had taken cleanly. He found me through Google Guaranteed and the first thing he asked was how to verify I was actually licensed. That is a completely fair question, and I respect anyone who asks it.

I gave him my BSIS license number right on the phone. He pulled it up on the state website while we were still talking. That took about thirty seconds and answered everything.

I drove out to him. The 2006 Impreza is a turn-key transponder setup, no fob, no buttons, just a blade and a chip. I cut a new key to his vehicle, ran the transponder registration against the immobilizer, and confirmed clean starts. No drama. The whole thing was done before his car came off the lift.

He saved a good chunk compared to what the dealer would have quoted just to walk in the door. More importantly, he now had a key he could trust, plus a spare so this conversation never has to happen again.

Subaru Impreza Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

I lost all my keys to my 2006 Impreza. Can you still make one?▼

Yes. All-keys-lost on a 2006 Impreza is a job we handle on site. The process involves decoding or cutting the blade to your vehicle and then registering the new transponder to the immobilizer with the old keys wiped from memory so they can't start the car.
