2014 Subaru BRZ
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: How much more does all-keys-lost cost compared to just adding a spare?

More. Sometimes a lot more, depending on the car. On the 2014 BRZ, losing all keys means the immobilizer has to be fully reset before any new fob can be registered. That's a longer procedure than a simple spare add, and the labor reflects it. When you still have one working key, adding a second is a quicker, cheaper job because the system doesn't need a full reset.

Q: Are aftermarket smart keys cheaper for the BRZ, and do they actually work?

Cheaper upfront, yes. But compatibility is the real question on a push-button system like this. The 2014 BRZ uses a proximity smart key, and not every aftermarket fob listed as "compatible" will program successfully. Some will, some won't, and the price difference disappears fast if you end up with a fob that can't be paired. Quality of the physical shell matters too.

Q: My BRZ starts fine but the door handle touch unlock stopped working. Is the smart key failing?

Probably not the fob. If the push-button start still recognizes the key and the other fob functions are working, the key itself is likely fine. Touch-sensitive door handle unlock on these can get flaky from dirt buildup around the handle sensor, moisture, or a wiring issue isolated to that door. Try cleaning around the handle thoroughly and retesting.

Q: Can I program a spare BRZ smart key myself at home?

No. The 2014 BRZ smart key requires diagnostic equipment connected to the OBD port to register a new fob. There's no ignition-turn sequence or button trick that works on this system. If you bought a fob online, you still need a locksmith or dealer to pair it to the car. The fob by itself is just plastic and electronics until it's been registered.

2014 Subaru BRZ Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A third-shift worker in Downtown Oxnard called me late on a weeknight. His 2014 BRZ was sitting in the gravel alley behind his duplex, and his only smart key had stopped being recognized by the car. No backup key. Push-button start, and the car was treating his fob like a stranger.

He'd already decided he needed a tow. He was mapping out the next few days without a car, figuring out rides, thinking about the wait time at the dealer. I told him to stay where he was.

I pulled up to the alley around midnight. The car was right there under a streetlight, which was as good a workspace as I was going to get at that hour. I connected to the OBD port, ran the all-keys-lost procedure for the BRZ, and registered his new fob. The emergency blade inside the fob handles the physical lock if the battery ever dies, but that night everything went through the smart system without a problem.

He didn't need a tow. He didn't need to take a day off to sit at the dealer. He had a working key before his shift started, standing in the same alley where he'd given up on the night an hour earlier.

The dealer would have been more money, plus a tow on top of that. It wasn't even close.

Subaru BRZ Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

What is the cheapest way to replace a smart key for my 2014 BRZ?▼

Call a mobile locksmith before you call the dealer. Dealer pricing on a smart key for a BRZ can run significantly higher when you factor in programming labor, any shop fees, and the time cost of dropping the car off. A mobile locksmith comes to you, programs on-site, and charges a fraction of what the dealer route costs.
