Got called out to a brake shop off Rose Avenue, right near College Park in Oxnard. A guy with a 2013 BRZ had already been burned once. He found one of those cheap Google ads, the kind that says one price on the phone and a different price on the invoice. That locksmith charged him, left, and the fob buttons were completely dead. The car would start with the push button, but lock, unlock, trunk, panic, nothing. All four buttons just gone.
He found me through Google Guaranteed and the first thing he asked was how to verify I was legit. Fair question after what he went through.
I gave him my BSIS license number right on the phone, LCO 6792. He pulled up the California Bureau of Security and Investigative Services site and confirmed it while we were still talking. I told him I would fix what the other guy left broken.
When I got there, I pulled up the BRZ on my Smart Pro and ran the proximity key registration from scratch. The previous tech had only done the transponder side of the handshake and skipped the remote binding to the Body Integrated Unit, which is part number 88281-CA811 on these. Once I ran the full procedure through the OBD-II port, the HYQ14ACX came back alive. All four buttons, clean engine start, door handle proximity detection on both sides.
He got exactly what I quoted on the phone. That is how it should work every time.
