I got a call from a guy in College Estates, Oxnard, parked at a shop near the neighborhood. He'd already had a rough afternoon.
He'd called one of those heavily advertised cheap-locksmith outfits first. They showed up, spent about an hour on his 2013 Subaru BRZ, took his money, and left him with a key that would start the car and nothing else. No remote functions. Lock button, unlock button, all of it dead. He figured he'd just live with it until a friend told him that wasn't normal and to find someone legit.
He found me through Google Guaranteed and his first question, before he even told me what was wrong, was how to verify I was actually licensed. That is a fair question and honestly a good habit. I gave him my BSIS license number on the phone and told him to pull it up on the state site while we were talking. He did. Then we talked about the actual problem.
What the previous guy had done was pair the transponder side of the fob without completing the remote enrollment. The car recognized the key for starting but the body control side never got the fob registered. On the BRZ smart key system, those are not automatically the same step.
I pulled up on site with the right equipment, went through the full programming sequence properly, and walked every button on the fob once it came back. Lock. Unlock. The other two buttons. Then the door handle touch sensors, which are the part owners forget to test and the part that tells you whether the whole system is actually talking. Everything came back clean.
He paid a fraction of what the dealer had quoted him for a fresh start, and he walked away with a fob that actually worked the way it was supposed to from the beginning.
