I got a call out to Leisure Village in Camarillo on a Tuesday afternoon. Retired gentleman, 1999 Alero, fob had been flaky for weeks and finally just stopped responding. He'd already swapped the battery himself, which was the right call, but it didn't fix it.

The Alero from this era uses a conventional ignition key and a separate keyless entry remote. They don't share a chip. The ignition key just needs to match the lock cylinder. I checked his existing fob. The CR2032 was fresh, contacts looked fine, but the fob had taken some damage on one corner, probably from a drop, and the internal board was slightly shifted. Not something a battery swap fixes.

I had the correct replacement remote in the van. Confirmed the factory FCC ID matched, popped in a new CR2032, then ran the onboard programming sequence right there in his driveway. No OBD hookup needed for the remote on this vehicle. Sequence runs through the door lock and ignition, takes a couple of minutes. Walked every button, confirmed range front and back of the vehicle, handed it back.
