How Aurora Key Technology Changed Over the Years
1st Generation (G-body)
This is where GM's security was still finding its footing. Your Aurora uses a VATS (Vehicle Anti-Theft System) with a resistor pellet embedded in the key blade. The pellet carries one of 15 fixed resistance values (about 400 to 12,000 ohms), and programming requires EEPROM tools, so this is strictly a locksmith job.
1st Generation Update
GM made a quiet but important change for the 2000 model year. The immobilizer switched to a PKM (Pass-Key Module) system with a Texas 4C chip, and your key became a remote head key with the buttons built into the key itself. Programming is done on-board, but it still requires a PIN from GM's system, so you need a locksmith with the right tools.
2nd Generation
This is where security got serious. Your Aurora runs PK3 (Pass-Key III) with a Megamos 13 (ID13) transponder chip, and programming goes through the OBD-II port under your dash. The system requires a 4-digit PIN and proper diagnostic equipment. The good news: we carry everything needed to handle this on-site, no tow required.
Which Key Does Your Aurora Use?
A standard blade key with a transponder chip in the head. Some early models also have a resistor pellet in the blade. The remote is a separate fob with three buttons.
Your key and remote are combined into one unit. Three buttons for lock, unlock, and trunk, with a Megamos 13 (ID13) chip inside the key head.
Similar look to the 2000 key, but upgraded to a Megamos 13 (ID13) chip for the PK3 system. Three buttons, standard blade, and CR2032 battery for the remote functions.
What to Expect Price-Wise
Every price includes the key blank, cutting, programming, and testing; lockouts run $95 to $125.

Common Aurora Key Problems
VATS Pellet Failure
The resistor pellet in your 1996-1999 Aurora key blade wears down. When it degrades, the VATS system reads the wrong resistance and kills the starter. We check with an ohmmeter on-site. If out of spec, we cut a new key with the correct value or install a bypass module.
PKM Module Failure
First check on a 2000-2003 Aurora no-start is the Pass-Key Module. These read the transponder signal, and after 20+ years they fail. When the PKM goes bad, even a programmed key gets rejected. We test the module with diagnostic tools before recommending a replacement.
Transponder Chip Desync
Your Aurora cranks but will not fire, security light flashing. Happens across 1996-2003 when the transponder loses sync with the BCM, often after a dead battery or jump start. Not a dead key, just a comms breakdown. We run a full relearn to get chip and BCM talking again.
Fob Battery Drain
Nine times out of ten on 2001-2003 Auroras, it is just a weak CR2032. The catch is corrosion on the battery contacts that a fresh battery alone will not fix. We clean the contacts and test the fob signal to make sure the remote is actually healthy.
Can You Program an Aurora Key Yourself?
No DIY option here. The VATS and EEPROM systems on these years require professional tools like a T-Code Pro or AD100. You need a locksmith for any key work on a 1996-1999 Aurora.
The 2000 Aurora uses a PKM system that requires a PIN from GM's Techline system. No self-programming procedure exists for this year. Call us at (805) 790-8162 and we handle it on-site.
Yes, the 2001-2003 Aurora supports a 30-minute relearn procedure. You insert a pre-cut chip key, turn to ON, wait 10 minutes and 30 seconds for the security light to go off, then cycle OFF and ON two more times with the same wait. Timing is critical, and you need a properly cut PK3 blank to start with. If it fails, wait an hour for the BCM to reset before trying again.
