Got a call from a guy over in the Promenade Park area of Ventura. His 1998 Aurora had been sitting in a parking spot for two days because the remote stopped doing anything. No lock, no unlock, no trunk pop. He assumed the car was immobilized and figured he needed a tow to the dealer.
He didn't.
The Aurora runs a split system. The KOBUT1BT remote, part number 15732805, handles keyless entry. The PASSKEY III transponder in the key blade handles starting. Two completely separate things. His car would have started the entire time. He just didn't know he could manually lock and unlock with the physical key in the door.
I pulled the remote apart on his trunk lid. The CR2032 was corroded along one edge, and the board contacts had a greenish film on them. Cleaned the contact pads, dropped in a new CR2032, and tested all four buttons: lock, unlock, trunk release, panic. Every one responded clean from about 30 feet out.
The whole thing took maybe ten minutes on site. He had been quoted a week turnaround and a "diagnostic fee" just to get looked at by the dealer. Instead he watched me do it in his parking spot and drove away the same afternoon.
Two days of thinking his car was dead. It was a battery and some corrosion.
