Got a call from a guy over in Skofield Park in Santa Barbara. His 2003 Aurora was sitting in his driveway doing the thing these cars are known for: crank, no start, SECURITY light flashing on the dash.
He had already tried the 10-minute relearn twice. Turned the key to ON, waited for the light to go off, turned it back, repeated three times. The internet told him that would fix it. It didn't.
I got there in about 20 minutes. Checked the lock cylinder first. The PassLock II sensor was reading intermittently, which is the number one failure point on these second-gen Auroras. The resistor value was drifting, so the BCM kept rejecting the start signal. Classic.
Cut a fresh B99 key on my portable machine, then ran the PassLock relearn through the OBD-II port with my diagnostic tool. That locks in the correct resistance value to the BCM so the car stops second-guessing itself. Whole thing took maybe 25 minutes from the time I pulled up.
He said he had been reading forums for two days trying to figure out if he needed a new ignition cylinder or a whole new BCM. Neither. Just the right relearn procedure done with the right equipment.
The dealer had quoted him days of wait time and wanted the car towed in. He drove it to dinner that night instead.
