Got a call from a guy near Hendry's Beach in Santa Barbara. His 2000 Aurora was cranking strong, full battery, but the engine would turn over and die within a second. The SECURITY light on the dash was solid. He already had it towed thinking it was the fuel pump.
That is the classic PassLock II failure on these second-gen Auroras. The Hall-effect sensor inside the ignition lock cylinder sends a voltage to the BCM. When that voltage drifts or the sensor gets flaky from age, the BCM kills the fuel injectors. The car sounds perfectly healthy otherwise, which is why a lot of people chase fuel delivery or spark before they figure out it is the anti-theft system shutting them down.
I cut a new B99 key on the van, matched the pellet resistance to his original, and ran the ten-minute relearn procedure on the BCM. Ignition on, wait for the SECURITY light to go off, cycle off, repeat three times. That is the reset. Nothing fancy, just patience and the right key.
He stood there watching the SECURITY light blink through each cycle. When the engine finally caught and stayed running on the fourth turn, he just nodded like he had been holding his breath the whole time.
The whole thing took about 35 minutes on site. He had already been quoted multiple days and a tow to the dealer.
