I was parked off Petit Avenue near River Park when the call came in. Someone in the Wagon Wheel area had a 1997 Aurora and both the key fob and the ignition key situation had become a problem at the same time. The fob had stopped locking and unlocking reliably, and they had a spare key cut somewhere that had never been programmed.
When I got there, the owner had already done the logical thing: fresh CR2032, same behavior. The fob would occasionally respond, then go dark for a few clicks, then work again. That intermittent pattern on these older GM remotes usually points to a cracked or worn contact pad inside the fob shell rather than a dead battery or a lost program. The battery is fine, the signal is fine, the physical connection between the button and the circuit board is not.
I opened the fob on the trunk lid, had a look, and sure enough one of the button contact pads had compressed enough that it was barely making contact on press. Cleaned the board, confirmed the contacts, reseated everything. Then we ran the onboard programming sequence to verify all four buttons were registering and the vehicle was seeing the remote correctly.
The spare key they had went through the same process while I was already there. Ten minutes extra to have a properly set up backup sitting in a drawer at home is always worth it.
The owner had called the dealer earlier in the week and was quoted a wait time that made no sense for a job this size. I was done and down the road before that appointment would have even started.
