Got a call from a guy near Cemetery Memorial Park in Ventura. His 1997 Aurora was sitting in a parking area and the remote was completely dead. Doors would not unlock, trunk button did nothing.
He had already gone through two CR2032 batteries from the gas station across the street. Same result. He was about to call the dealer, which, for a car this age, is almost funny. They would have ordered the part and told him to wait days.
I pulled the KOBUT1BT apart on the spot. The problem was not the battery. One of the contact pads on the circuit board had a hairline crack, probably from the remote getting dropped or sat on over the years. These old GM remotes take a beating and the board is not exactly reinforced. I had a replacement KOBUT1BT unit in the van, already matched to the right frequency.
Programming the new remote on the 1997 Aurora is an onboard procedure through the ignition cycle and the driver door lock switch. No scan tool needed for the remote side. Took me maybe ten minutes to pair it and verify all four buttons. Lock, unlock, trunk release, panic. Each one confirmed at about 30 feet.
He stood there clicking it from across the lot, testing the range like a kid with a new toy. Then he just tucked it in his pocket and nodded. Done.
The ignition key was fine. His VATS pellet read clean at the correct resistance value, so we left that alone. No reason to fix what is not broken.
