1st Gen Launch
Your 2018 C-HR uses a 3-button flip key with a Texas 4D transponder chip. No push-button start on this year. The key communicates with Toyota's immobilizer system, and programming requires OBD-II access through the diagnostic port under your dash.
1st Gen Mid
Your 2019 C-HR might have a flip key or a smart key, depending on trim level. Higher trims got push-button start with a proximity fob. Both versions still use the Texas 4D chip and require OBD-II programming, so the process is similar either way.
1st Gen Update
Your 2020 C-HR moved to a smart key with push-button start across most trims. Same Texas 4D transponder chip under the hood, but the proximity system means your key talks to the car constantly. Programming can be done via OBD-II or on-board methods depending on the scenario.
1st Gen Final
Your 2021 C-HR keeps the smart key and push-button start setup from the 2020. Texas 4D chip, CR2032 battery, OBD-II programming. This was the final year for the C-HR in the US market, and the key system stayed consistent with the prior year.
Which Key Does Your C-HR Use?
A folding key with the blade tucked inside the fob. Press the button and the metal key flips out. You insert this into the ignition to start the car.
A fob that stays in your pocket. Walk up, grab the handle, press the start button. There is a hidden emergency blade inside the fob for backup if the battery dies.

Transponder Sync Failure
First check is whether your immobilizer still recognizes the key. After a dead battery or fob swap, the transponder registration can fall out of sync with the ECU. We re-register via OBD-II and verify the Texas 4D chip. About 15 minutes, no parts.
Smart Key Battery Drain
Usually it is just the CR2032 draining faster than expected. The proximity system on 2019-2021 models constantly polls the fob, eating batteries quicker than a standard remote. We test fob output before recommending anything beyond a $5 battery swap.
Flip Key Blade Wear
Your 2018 or 2019 flip key blade goes in the ignition hundreds of times a year. Cuts wear, the key sticks or refuses to turn. A worn blade leaves you stuck in a Simi Valley lot with a key that will not engage. We cut a fresh blade on-site.
Prox Sensor Interference
Metal objects near the smart key block the proximity signal. Phone mounts, magnetic cases, even a heavy keychain cause intermittent push-button start failures on 2020-2021 models. Before charging anything, we isolate the fob and test it clean.
Can You Program a C-HR Key Yourself?
No DIY self-programming procedure exists for any year of the C-HR. Toyota's immobilizer requires professional diagnostic tools like the Autel IM608 or Toyota Techstream to register a new key to the ECU. The older Toyota trick of inserting the key five times and cycling the door does not work on this platform.
