2020 Toyota C-HR Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
Got a call from a guy near the Del Sol shopping area in Oxnard. He had just walked out of a store and his 2020 C-HR would not respond to the fob at all. No door unlock from the handle sensor, no trunk release, push-button start showing "Key not detected" on the dash. He was holding the fob against the start button like the owner's manual says for a dead battery, and even that was giving him nothing.
I pulled up and the first thing I checked was the CR2032. It tested at 2.4 volts. Not fully dead, but low enough to cause intermittent issues. But swapping in a fresh cell changed nothing. The proximity antenna module was receiving zero signal from the fob.
Opened the smart key housing. The 8A chip board inside looked fine, no corrosion, no cracked solder. Then I noticed the battery terminal contact on the negative side had a slight warp, just enough that the new CR2032 was not making solid contact. A small straighten with a pick, reseat the battery, snap the case shut.
Every function came back. Handle touch unlock on all doors, trunk release, push-button start. I walked the car twice checking range because these 8A fobs can be picky about distance when something is marginal.
He thought the whole smart key system had failed. It was a bent battery clip. Took me longer to drive there than to fix it.
