It was a Friday night at one of the venues down in South Bank, Oxnard. A couple came out after the show and the C-HR just sat there quiet. Fob in hand, nothing happening. No locks cycling, no lights flashing, not even a key-not-detected warning on the dash because they never got that far. The car was just ignoring them.
They tried both fobs. Same result. At that point they figured the car was spending the night in the lot and they would sort it out Monday through the dealer. Then one of them searched for a Toyota locksmith and found me about fifteen minutes away.

I opened the first fob right on the hood. The CR2032 was original to the car. Six years old. It had just enough voltage to fool a basic tester but not enough to actually power the transponder exchange at range. The second fob had the same story. I replaced both batteries, seated them properly, verified the contacts were making clean connection, and ran a resync through the OBD port on my diagnostic tool.
Both fobs came back. Locks, touch-handle unlock on the door, the start button, everything. I walked each function before I called it done.
They drove home that night. The dealer was a Monday appointment, a loaner question, and a wait time that was going to stretch into the week. This was forty minutes on a Friday.
