The call came from a tire shop in Windsor North/River Ridge in Oxnard. Not a call I expected on a Tuesday afternoon, but those are usually the ones that turn into something interesting.
A customer had brought his 2021 C-HR in for a tire rotation. While it was there, he figured he would handle the dead smart key situation he had been putting off. He called a locksmith, that locksmith showed up, attempted the programming, and the tool threw errors partway through. The locksmith tried again, got the same result, and left. Now the car would not accept any key at all. The security system was sitting in a fault state, and the tire shop was holding a car that could not be moved.
That is when they called me.
I got there and the story was familiar. A partial programming attempt on a late-model Toyota smart key system can leave the module in a locked communication state where standard OBD access gets refused. The system is not permanently broken, but it is not cooperative either. I brought in the bench tool I carry for exactly this scenario - the kind of equipment that reads security data directly from the module when the diagnostic port is no longer an option. I pulled the relevant module, cleared the fault condition, and rebuilt the key registration from scratch using the factory fob the customer had on him, the three-button unit matching the factory FCC ID on the fob.
The system accepted the new registration on the first clean attempt. I tested all three buttons, walked both doors, confirmed the start button was seeing the fob from inside the cabin, and locked up with the handle sensor before I packed the tools.
Total time was about ninety minutes. The customer said the dealer had quoted him a multi-day turnaround and a price that made him hesitate long enough to try the other locksmith first. He saved a good chunk coming to me, even accounting for the mess the first attempt left behind.
I do not say that to dig at the other guy. Late-model Toyota smart key programming is not forgiving when a job goes sideways. You either have the recovery tools or you do not.
