Downtown Oxnard, around 8pm. A woman called me from a hospital parking lot. Her kid had just been discharged and she needed to get home. Her 2019 C-HR would not respond to the fob at all. She pressed unlock, nothing. She held the fob against the start button for the backup start procedure, still nothing.
The dealer was closed for the night. She found my number and called.
I got to her in about 25 minutes. First thing I did was get the door open and check her old fob. The CR2032 had leaked just enough to corrode the negative battery contact inside the MOZBR1ET-0010 shell. That corrosion killed the passive signal too, which is why even the backup touch-start trick failed. The 8A transponder chip needs a clean circuit to get powered by the immobilizer antenna ring, and hers was not getting it.
I connected my IM608 to the OBD-II port, pulled up the Toyota Smart Key system on the 8A platform, registered a new MOZBR1ET fob, cut a fresh TOY51 emergency insert blade, and erased the dead one. Tested lock, unlock, panic, push-button start, and the backup hold-to-dash procedure.
From her call to engine running, about 45 minutes. She buckled her kid in, got the medicine sorted at home, and had one less thing sitting on her that night. The dealer would have meant waiting until morning and paying way more for the same result.
