Grand Highlander Key Technology by Generation
First Generation (U70)
A 4-button smart key with a laser-cut emergency blade tucked inside the fob. Your Grand Highlander runs Toyota's advanced immobilizer system, which means the key's transponder chip has to be registered to your specific vehicle's ECU before the engine will turn over. Push-button start is standard across every trim, and the fob uses a CR2032 battery.
Which Key Does Your Grand Highlander Use?
This is the rectangular fob with the Toyota logo that stays in your pocket. You press the button on the dash to start the engine. There is a small emergency blade hidden inside the fob for manual door entry if the battery dies.
The Real Cost of a Grand Highlander Key
Every price includes the key blank, cutting, programming, and a full test of lock, unlock, push-button start, and hatch before we leave.

Common Grand Highlander Key Problems
Smart Key Battery Depletion
Your Grand Highlander's push-button start stops responding. The CR2032 drains faster with heavy wireless-charging or remote use. Pop the fob open, swap a fresh CR2032. If issues continue, call (805) 790-8162 because the fob may need reprogramming.
Keyless Ignition System Sensitivity
Weak fob signal is the culprit, not the car. When the Grand Highlander cannot pick up the smart key, push-button start refuses or works intermittently. The system may need a proximity recalibration with Toyota tools. We handle on-site in Simi Valley or Camarillo.
Immobilizer Communication Fault
We check the OBD-II port and run diagnostics on the immobilizer first. The Grand Highlander uses Toyota's advanced immobilizer with a CERT module and security gateway, so a comms fault between transponder and ECU can mimic a dead battery or bad starter. We reprogram on-site.
Key Not Detected After Jump Start
After a jump start, the Grand Highlander may not recognize the smart key. Real cause is the electrical system needing a reset. Turn ignition off, step out, lock manually, wait 30 seconds, retry. If not detected, the immobilizer needs re-syncing on-site in Oxnard.
Can You Program a Grand Highlander Key Yourself?
No DIY self-programming option exists for the Grand Highlander. Toyota's advanced immobilizer with CERT module and security gateway requires professional tools like bypass cables, emulators, and OBD programmers. This is a shop-level or mobile-locksmith job, period.

Did You Know?
Most people do not know this: the 2025 Toyota Grand Highlander offers three completely different powertrains, each with its own transmission. The 2.4L turbo gets an 8-speed automatic, the 2.5L hybrid uses an ECVT, and the 362-hp Hybrid MAX runs a 6-speed. That means locksmiths actually need to verify the engine type before programming a key, because the immobilizer protocols can vary depending on which powertrain your Grand Highlander has under the hood.
