2005 Toyota 4runner Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
Out near Goleta Beach Park in Santa Barbara, a guy flagged me down at the library lot. He had a 2005 4Runner that cranked but died after two seconds, every time. Classic immobilizer fuel cutoff. The SECURITY light on the dash was solid, not blinking, which told me the transponder was trying to talk but the ECU was not accepting it.
Turns out he had already paid another locksmith for a new key. That key looked right, TOY43 blade, 4D-67 chip inside. But the engine would fire and then the immobilizer would kill injection almost immediately. The other tech told him his transponder key amplifier, the ID box mounted on the steering column, was bad. Then he left.
The ID box was not bad. I checked it with my IM608 through the OBD-II port. Communication was clean to the immobilizer ECU, part number 89780-35060 on these fourth-gen 4Runners. What happened was the previous locksmith started the seed-key security handshake but never completed the timed registration. Toyota's system writes a temporary acceptance, but if you skip the full countdown or pull the tool early, the key never commits to permanent memory.
I used my TOY43 Lishi to verify the blade cuts were correct. They were. Then I cleared the failed registration, ran a clean 4D-67 transponder write with the full security sequence, and waited out the timed cycle. IM608 screen came back showing the key stored in slot one, permanent, not temporary.
He turned the key. Engine caught and held. SECURITY light went off. He just sat there for a second with his hand still on the key, like he was waiting for it to stall again.
One job, done right this time, for a fraction of what the whole mess had already cost him.
