Out in the Samarkand neighborhood in Santa Barbara, I got a call from a guy who had already paid another locksmith for a 2005 4Runner key that never worked right.

The engine would crank, fire up, and then die in about two seconds, every single time. The first locksmith told him the immobilizer module was bad and walked away. He believed it for a while, because what else was he supposed to think.

What had happened was a partial registration. Toyota's immobilizer on this generation goes through a seed-and-key security sequence over OBD, and there is a timed enrollment window built into it. If you rush it, drop the connection, or skip a step, the key can appear to write but it never commits to the module's permanent memory. The car starts, the immobilizer sees an unfamiliar signal, and it cuts fuel. That two-second stall is exactly what an incomplete registration looks like.

I decoded the blade first and confirmed the cut was correct. Then I connected through the OBD port, cleared the failed registration attempt, and ran a clean reset with the full security sequence at the right pace. Watched the confirmation on my screen showing the key permanently stored.

He started the car. It ran. No stall.

He had already paid someone once for a job that didn't hold. What I could give him this time was a screen showing the registration was committed, not just attempted. That difference matters more than any pitch I could make.
