I got a call from a guy in East End, Ojai, sometime past two in the morning. His 2019 4Runner was sitting in his driveway and the fob had just gone dark. No response. He'd tried the lock button, the unlock button, standing closer, standing farther. Nothing.

First thing I did was crack the fob open and swap the CR2016. He had a CR2032 in there. Wrong cell, slightly too thick, which can actually bow the contact plate and drop the voltage connection to nearly nothing. Put the correct CR2016 in, seated it flush, and the fob lit right back up. Locked the doors from ten feet away, first try.
But I don't close a job on one test. I walked every button, checked the key-not-detected warning was gone from the cluster, ran the blade in the door cylinder, and had him start and shut the car down twice. Everything clean.
He didn't need programming. He didn't need a new fob. He needed the right battery seated right, done on his driveway at two-thirty in the morning instead of a tow and a two-day dealer wait. Saved him a good chunk, and he was back inside before three.
