Yes, broken key extraction is a standard call for me. I carry the extraction tools to pull a broken blade from a Toyota ignition cylinder without pulling the column apart or damaging the tumblers.

Once it's out, I can cut a new key from the extracted piece or by decoding the lock directly on site. The 2007 4Runner key housing is all-plastic around the head, and those shells do crack with regular use. Owners on the forums mention the head splitting at the single retention point, usually after years of a heavy keychain pulling on it. If that's your situation, sometimes the chip inside survives even when the shell doesn't, and a retransplant into a new shell saves you the full replacement cost. First thing to check: try your other key if you have one. If the second key starts it, your primary key has a transponder issue, either a damaged chip or a programming fault. If neither key starts it, you're either looking at a different mechanical problem or, in the all-keys-lost scenario, you need a mobile locksmith with the right equipment at the OBD port to re-register working keys to the car.

Don't confuse this with a dead battery. A dead battery won't crank at all. Cranks-but-won't-start with a Toyota transponder key is its own distinct situation and worth calling about before you start chasing other parts.

Can I program a second key myself if I still have one working key for my 2007 4Runner?
