2006 Toyota 4runner Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
A guy visiting his in-laws near Douglas Family Preserve in Santa Barbara called me about his 2006 4Runner. He wanted a spare key he could actually carry daily, not something tossed in a drawer for emergencies.
First thing he asked, point blank: "Is an aftermarket key going to be as good as a dealer key?"
Fair question. Here is the honest answer I gave him standing next to the truck.
His 4Runner uses a TOY43 mechanical blade and a 4D-67 transponder chip. The aftermarket blank I carry has the same blade profile, same chip generation, same three-button remote layout with the same FCC ID HYQ12BBX circuit board inside. The housing weighs the same, the buttons click the same. The difference is there is no Toyota logo stamped on the back.
I cut the blade on my mobile machine, seated the key in the ignition, and ran the transponder registration through the OBD-II port using the existing master key for handshake. Programmed the remote side with the door-lock cycling procedure. Tested ignition start, tested lock, unlock, and panic from 30 feet out, then swapped to his original key and retested so nothing got knocked loose.
He turned both keys over in his hands a few times, comparing them. Functionally identical. Where aftermarket goes wrong is cheap sourcing: thin shells that crack in a month, generic chips that almost match. I test every batch before it goes in the van. Bad blanks get sent back.
He drove off with two working keys for a fraction of what the dealer quoted him.
