I was up near Serra Cross/Grant Park on a Tuesday afternoon when the call came in. Guy said his Yaris "wouldn't start," which usually means something a little different than what I find when I get there.
He met me in the parking area off Ferro Drive. The original key was snapped - the blade had sheared right at the bow, the part you grip. The blade end was still in his pocket. The rest was somewhere he couldn't say. He'd been rotating between his fingernails and a flathead to try to turn the ignition stub. It hadn't gone well.
I pulled the broken section out of the cylinder first. That's the part people skip in their heads when they think about a replacement key - if there's debris in the lock, a new key won't seat right anyway. Once the cylinder was clear, I cut a replacement blade to his vehicle and programmed the transponder to the immobilizer. Tested it a few times in the ignition, ran the remote buttons, confirmed the CR2016 in the replacement was fresh.
He'd already called the dealer before he called me. They told him to tow it in, that they'd need it for a day, and quoted him a number that made him pause before he said it out loud. He didn't need any of that. The whole thing was done in the parking lot, in about forty minutes, and he drove home.
