It was a Tuesday evening and the call came from an empty office park off the North Fillmore side of town. The guy had been there late, walking out to his 2014 FJ Cruiser with his hands full, and somewhere between the door and the lot, the key was just gone. Checked every pocket, went back inside twice, looked under the desk. Nothing.
He had one key. Had always had one key. Now he had zero, and the FJ was sitting there completely locked with no way to move it.
When I picked up, he was already looking up tow truck numbers. I told him to slow down and look at the base of his windshield on the driver's side. He found the VIN. Then I had him open his insurance app for the registration info. Two minutes on the phone and I had everything I needed. I was already pulling the right blank and prepping before I backed out of my driveway.
I got there and he was standing next to the FJ under a parking lot light, relieved to see my van. I verified ownership, confirmed the VIN, and got to work. Cut the blade to the vehicle, programmed the transponder to the immobilizer, synced the four-button remote, and tested every function before I handed it over. Lock, unlock, and both of the other buttons. Ignition confirmed. Done under the parking lot lights in about forty minutes.
He mentioned the dealer quote a friend had gotten for a similar job on a different Toyota. It was a number that made him wince when he heard it, and I was already packed up for what I charge. He drove home that night. The tow truck never got called.
