Yes, broken key extraction is a standard mobile job. The FJ Cruiser uses a conventional ignition cylinder, so specialized extraction tools can remove the broken piece without pulling or damaging the cylinder itself.

Once it's out, I can decode the cut from the extracted piece and cut a new chipped key on the spot. What you want to avoid is any attempt to fish it out with something improvised. Pushing the fragment deeper or damaging the wafers makes the job harder and sometimes means replacing the cylinder entirely, which is a bigger repair. Call a locksmith first, before the DIY attempts.

What exactly is a transponder key and why does the 2007 FJ Cruiser need one?

A transponder key looks like a regular metal key, but there's a small chip embedded in the plastic head. When you insert the key and turn the ignition, the vehicle's antenna ring around the ignition cylinder reads that chip. The 2007 FJ Cruiser uses this system. There are no buttons, no remote locking, no fob battery. It's purely ignition-based. Depends on what you bought. The 2007 FJ Cruiser requires a key blank with the correct transponder chip type inside. There are aftermarket blanks sold online that look identical to the correct key but contain the wrong chip, and those cannot be programmed to work with this vehicle no matter what equipment you use.

If you bring me the blank, I can check the chip before we go any further. If it's the right type, I can cut and program it. If it's wrong, you'd need a different blank. Buying the key through me or confirming compatibility before purchasing saves that back-and-forth. A lot of owners find out the hard way that not all chips are equal.
