A guy over in Midtown in Ventura flagged me down through YouTube. He had watched one of my Toyota transponder key videos months earlier and saved my number. When his 2007 FJ Cruiser left him standing in his driveway with a key that snapped right at the bow, he already knew the call to make.
He had the broken pieces in a sandwich bag. Classic FJ key failure. The TOY43 shell on these uses a single thin plastic peg holding the blade to the housing, and after years of that chunky ignition twist, it just gives. FJ forums are full of owners saying the same thing. Some guys go through multiple shells.
I pulled up, checked the break. The 4D-67 chip inside was fine. Blade snapped clean. I transplanted the chip into a new TOY43 shell, cut a fresh blade from the door lock decode so the cut matched his locks, and tested it through the immobilizer cycle. Engine caught on the first turn. Security light went off exactly the way it should.
Then I cut him a spare while I was there, programmed the second 4D-67 through the OBD port using my VVDI. Two working keys, both tested on ignition, both tested on the doors. Whole thing took maybe 25 minutes. The dealer wanted him to tow the truck in and leave it for a day. He drove to lunch instead.
