A guy in Fillmore near the Heritage Valley Tourism Bureau called me around 9 at night. His 2012 FJ Cruiser was sitting in the driveway and his only key had snapped at the bow, right where the plastic meets the blade. The transponder chip was still trapped inside the broken key head.
He had already called a dealer. They told him to tow it in, leave it, and they would get to it in two to three days. He said he just stood there in his driveway holding two pieces of a key.
I got there in under an hour. The FJ Cruiser uses a TOY43 blade and a 4D-67 chip, which is the standard Texas Instruments setup Toyota ran across most of their truck line in this era. I cut a new blade by code using the key number from his glovebox tag, then programmed a fresh 4D-67 chip through the OBD-II port. The immobilizer ECU on these FJ Cruisers, part number 89784-35060 on most builds, accepts new keys once you authenticate through the diagnostic handshake.
Whole thing took about 25 minutes. He turned the key, the engine caught, and he just nodded like he had been holding his breath.
I cut him a spare while I was there. Two working keys for a fraction of what the dealer quoted him for one, and his FJ never left the driveway.
