A guy in North Fillmore called on a weekday afternoon. His 2011 FJ Cruiser was parked near the lot by the older homes off Mountain View, and his only key was just gone. Not locked inside, not at home on the counter. Gone.

I pulled up with my decode tools and got started on the door cylinder. Reading the lock mechanically gave me the cut information I needed to make a working blade without the original. Once I had that, I connected at the OBD port, cleared the old key from the immobilizer, and registered the new transponder. The whole sequence on the FJ Cruiser takes longer than a standard key job because the immobilizer reset has a timed step built in. You can't rush it.
He watched from the sidewalk, asked a couple of questions about how the transponder side works. Normal curiosity. When I turned the key and the engine came up clean, he nodded like he'd been expecting it to fail.
