Most all-keys-lost calls I get are some version of the same story. Bought it used, came with one key, always meant to get a spare made, never did. Then something happens.
The call I got from Hot Springs in Montecito was a little different. The owner still had her key. Or half of it. The blade had snapped clean inside the door lock, and the housing had cracked apart in her hand. She was standing there with the broken shell in her palm and the other half still stuck in the lock cylinder.
I got out there and started with the blade fragment. Extracted it from the cylinder without damage to the lock, then decoded the cuts directly from the cylinder itself. While I had everything out, I also checked the transponder chip inside the cracked housing. Chips survive a lot. Cracked shell, snapped blade, none of that touches the chip if the housing just broke around it. Hers was intact.
Because the chip was readable, I did not need to run a full all-keys-lost procedure. I pulled the data I needed, cut two new keys to match the decoded cylinder, and transferred her chip into a new shell. Both keys programmed and tested against the ignition.
Forty minutes, start to finish. She had two working keys instead of zero, and the lock cylinder was undamaged. The dealer was going to be a much longer wait and a lot more money. Having the broken key, even shattered like hers was, made the whole job faster. Do not throw away the pieces.
